The House Next Door

The house next door is for sale. Don't buy it, 'cause it's haunted.

I had heard from the lady selling it that she suspected as much, and yesterday I went over during her "Open House" hours to see for myself. As soon as I walked in, I started getting goosebumps on my arms, and when I actually tried to sense something, it was darned creepy.

First off, I didn't get much in the living room--that felt safest, but the kitchen-- oh, man, I felt like the whole room was watching me. It felt nasty, too, like it was in a bad mood and wanted to yell about something.

I went upstairs to the second floor. The hallway felt a little dodgy, but each room felt off-- the master bedroom felt cold and really depressed-feeling, then this little room with a balcony felt really angry, like people had screamed and fought up there a lot. The lady told me that under the carpeting, there was a big burn mark right in the middle of the floor. I started feeling achy, like a bad muscle ache in the left side of my neck. When I walked past the bedroom again, I could feel the cold more severely. The lady then told me that at least two, probably three people have died in that room...

Then the third floor-- while I was up there, I could feel a presence, maybe more than one, but the weirdest feeling was the feeling of the "bed-spins"-- you know, how when you lie on your back in bed and the world seems to spin around? I had that feeling, except upright... very dizzy and confused. I went downstairs.

Nothing standing out in the dining room, just the kitchen that felt all nasty. The cold feeling seemed to follow me through the house. All the hairs on my arms, legs, and body were standing up at this point, and I tried to stay inside for a while longer, but I got the impression that whatever was in there was becoming aware of my awareness of them, and I didn't want any trouble. I felt the urge to leave immediately.

I went outside to talk to the lady. She told me about a number of instances in the house where she has heard voices, seen people or animals out of the corner of her eye, felt presences or heard noises. On one occasion her boyfriend had a pillow yanked out from under his head while relaxing on the sofa. On another occasion, she heard the sound of dropping keys on the kitchen floor, and when she bent to pick them up, several dishes fell out of a cabinet and onto her head and back. They have experienced illness, lethargy, and difficulty stopping smoking or drinking while living at the house.

I recommended some sage, white candles, and sea salt, a few other remedies. I have a feeling that whatever is in there is going to need more than just the usual gentle coaxing. At least she is moving out. Maybe, with any luck, someone who isn't bothered by this stuff will move in.

I stood out on the lawn for a while, shivering and trying to will whatever to stay there and not follow me. I couldn't sleep last night, hoping that they didn't. My occasional insomnia isn't completely odd, though, as those who read this will recall.
