weirdness at school
Before class the other day one of my students took a header and fainted in the hallway. She clocked herself on the forehead pretty solidly, and wound up being taken to the hospital by the campus medics. Turns out she hadn't been sleeping more than a couple of hours each night for several days. She wasn't in class the next session, either. I'm guessing she gave herself a concussion, but we'll see.
The same day, I'm up at the board doing a particularly notes-intensive lecture, when I notice that one of my other students isn't writing. I ask her if she needs to borrow a pen or pencil or some paper or something. She does not respond, although she's looking right at me. I ask her again, and then ask her if she's okay, but she remains unresponsive. Her eyes are tracking me, however. Another student kind of gently prods her, but all she does is glance at him, so I send a student to get the secretary to call the campus medics...again. A few minutes later, they arrive and I tell them what happened and that she mentioned being diabetic at the start of the semester. They take her blood sugar reading and discover that it is in the 600's....normal is between 90-120....and then they cart her off to the hospital as well.
So I can safely say that not only are my lectures a knockout, but they are sweeeet!
It's been a weird week.
