Glimpse in a basement

I was painting at this old house in Ohio City near Bridge Ave. and 45th Street.
I was down in the basement rinsing out one of my brushes, when I spied, in my peripheral vision, movement.
My heart leaped suddenly into my throat. It was very quick, but I could see, quite fully and clearly, a slim young man of no more than thirty dressed in a black suit. He took two steps toward me with an earnest expression, as if he wanted to impart some crucial information to me, and then completely disappeared. I was looking right at him.
It took me a few minutes to catch my breath, but after he vanished I felt no residual emotion or fear.
